ABSTRACT

Table 1. Studies that have shown echinoderm settlement and metamorphosis in response to natural substrata. The cues that larvae have been reponed to respond to are divided into microbial, macroalgal. conspecific, and other natural categories. The "other natural" classification contains substrata that cannot be grouped under any of the other three divisions and includes factors such as sand, mud, shells, plants, and invenebrate organisms. Within the cue categories, species are listed alphabetically with the letter beside each species indicating its class: AzAsteroidea, C•Crinoidea, E2 Echinoidea, H=Holothuroidea, and O=Ophiuroidea. The asterisk ••• denotes that the genus or species name was not given in the reference.
