ABSTRACT

It is instructive to look at the measurements made at the time of the landfall for Typhoon Ellen, since that typhoon was the last to pass extremely close to the Territory. The 'eye' of Typhoon Ellen passed between Hong Kong and Macau on 9 September 1984. The area of greatest wind speeds was therefore within a few kilometres of the centre of Hong Kong. Figure 5.12 shows a representation of the wind-field over Hong Kong as measured at the ROHK's anemometer sites throughout the Territory. It is noteworthy that the generated wind speeds are quite similar to the 50-year return period statistics produced above. The measurements can therefore be used as a guide to the amount of sheltering likely to result from a 'probability 0.02' wind predominantly from a southeasterly direction.
