ABSTRACT

In the late 1960s it was beginning to be suggested that the demand for water in the Northumbrian region would relatively quickly outgrow supplies, and in reports submitted in 1967 and 1970 to the Government the Water Resources Board recommended that a large reservoir on the Tyne and an aqueduct to the Tees would afford the most appropriate development of supply provision. Public inquiries were held into the Scheme in 1972 and 1973, resulting in its approval by the Secretary of State in October 1973.
