ABSTRACT

The ability to introduce genes into the germ line of mammals is one of the greatest technical advances in recent biology. Animals or plants into whom heterologous DNA (transgene) have been artificially introduced and integrated in their genomes are called transgenics. Transgenic animals provide excellent models for studying molecular genetics of early vertebrate development, actions of oncogenes, and the biological functions of hormones at different stages of development. Such animals provide exciting possibilities for expressing useful recombinant proteins and for generating precise animal models of human genetic disorders.
