In different parts of the world, the menace of a rapidly-increasing popu lation, the wanton growth of industries and increasing urbanization has created major problems with the disposal of sewage and industrial efflu ents. The disposal of wastes is a matter of serious concern because along with some essential plant nutrients, wastes also contain potentially toxic heavy metals such as Pb, Ni, Cd, and Cr. The subsequent entry of these metals into the food chain, through the crops grown on soils irrigated with sewage water, may cause disorders in animals and humans. The extent of metal uptake in agricultural crops is, in addition to the actual metal concentrations in the soil, also dependent on various physical and chemical soil properties.
