ABSTRACT

Host plant resistance to insect pests and pathogens is an economically and ecologically preferred alternative as compared to other pest management strategies, particularly the synthetic pesticides. What does host plant resistance (HPR) represent to farmers? Firstly, HPR is simple and convenient. Nothing could be more simpler than the plant controlling the target pest provided that it does not require additional inputs and that it does not compromise the expression of important agronomic characters. Finally, resistance usually works well in combination with other forms of pest management, although it can have severe implications for the efficacy of some alternative pest management strategies such as natural enemies.
