ABSTRACT

The philosophy of integrated pest management (IPM) provides the guiding principles for enlightened pest control. Widespread adoption of chemical control was not a matter of chance. It reflected the fact that chemical methods provided the users with a highly successful means of achieving their objectives, as the insecticides are highly effective, have a rapid effect, flexible application, are readily available, and the application technology is simple. Most insecticides kill the insects through specific neuro-physiological processes. It is the extreme sensitivity of the nervous system which make the insects highly vulnerable to insecticides. However, the effect on a specific site does not mean greater species selectivity, nor is it reflected in the resistance mechanisms. In this chapter, an attempt has been made to review the latest information on chemical control of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) in cotton, pigeonpea, chickpea, sunflower and tomato.
