ABSTRACT

For rational analysis and modeling of RC structures, the mechanical behavior of components interacting across the interfaces has to be properly taken into account. Local discontinuities (see Figure 8.1), such as pulling out the reinforcing bars from a concrete mass, and localized shear slipping along joints tend to take place around the member interfaces as a result of abrupt change in sectional stiffness of connecting elements. Site damage assessments after earthquakes in Alaska in 1964 [1] and San Fernando in 1972 [2] revealed that horizontal construction joints in low-and medium-rise buildings were severely damaged. Some typical examples of cast-in-place and pre-cast construction joints are shown in Figure 8.1.
