ABSTRACT

The importance of the brain as a target of infection by HIV can easily be forgotten. Understandably drug and vaccine development are seen as crucial, and brain disorders may be perceived as only affecting a small number of people. However, in reality the thought of developing dementia often causes alarm to those with HIV disease or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The burden of care is often left to partners, friends and family who may feel isolated and be unaware of the few resources available.
