I. DEFINITIONS AND THEMES The title of this volume is Morphogenesis. But what does "morphogenesis" mean? Morphogenesis, as defined by Webster, is the production or evolution of form and structure. This definition, however, merely translates the components of the word, morpho (form) and genesis (birth), from the Greek to English. Although such a definition provides a beginning, additional information is helpful. The Encyclopedia Britannica provides more: "Morphogenesis is the shaping of an organism by embryological processes of cellular differentiation, histogenesis, organogenesis and development according to the genetic "blueprint" of the potential organism and environmental conditions." This definition alludes to the processes involved and the regulators of the processes, namely the genetic blueprint and the environment.
