ABSTRACT

A q u a c u ltu re is an im p o r ta n t a sp ec t o f w o rld f ish e ry p ro d u c tio n . D ata from the F ood a n d A g ricu ltu re O rg an iza tio n (FAO) of th e U n ited N ations sh o w th a t th e g lobal fishery cap tu re increased u n til a b o u t 1990, b u t since th e n it h a s rem a in e d a t a ro u n d 90 m illio n to n s y e a r '1. A q u a c u ltu re p ro d u c tio n h as b een s tead ily in creas in g a n d reach ed 40 m illion to n s o r a b o u t 30% of the to ta l w o rld fishery p ro d u c tio n in 2002. The d e m a n d for fish ery p ro d u c ts w ill in crease in th e fu tu re in re sp o n se to th e g ro w in g w o rld p o p u la tio n (B row n e t al., 1998). T hus, a q u acu ltu re p ro d u c tio n m u st increase or there w ill be a scarcity of fishery p ro d u c ts .
