ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates, there are numerous well-executed systematic reviews and meta-analyses. It shows that patient-centered care has a positive influence on patient outcomes such as patient adherence, patient self-reported health, and physiologic health outcomes. The chapter reviews on research linking interventions with improvements in patient-centered practitioner behavior and the patient-practitioner interaction. It also reviews patient-centered care and patient adherence to medication or lifestyle regimens. The chapter summarizes the evidence on patient-centered care in relation to patient health outcomes. It focuses on measures of patient-centered care will be summarized, indicating the concepts and components covered by the measures. Researchers should take note of the decisions on study design and measurement that may therefore reduce the likelihood of finding an association between communication and patient adherence or in intervention studies, of finding an impact on patient adherence.
