ABSTRACT

An advance decision (AD)/an advance decision to refuse treatment (ADRT), otherwise known as an advance directive or a living will,1 is a statement of treatment preferences that indicates a person’s wishes should the capacity for decision-making be lost in the future. That is, it sets out clear instruction on refusal of treatment or medical intervention or procedures. Based on the principle of autonomy, it aims to project this forward into possible future mental incapacity.
