ABSTRACT
Th is story is based on a hypothesis that I hope will become clear: that an identity can be constructed around chronic disease through discerning what truths underlie, and are shared by, chronic diseases in general. Such truths may be considered as operating at various levels, in sociology, epidemiology, therapeutics, clinical management and health policy, and pre-eminently in the experience of the patients and their carers.
