ABSTRACT

The nicotinic cholinergic receptors facilitate transmission between the pre-and postganglionic neurons of both branches of the autonomic nervous system, as well as at the neuromuscular junction.

5 a Neostigmine is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which blocks the breakdown of acetylcholine, thus prolonging its action. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors can be used at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) to enhance transmission in myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease resulting in NMJ-receptor blockade.
