ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the background of the assessment of colour vision. It provides a list of equipment required for this assessment. The chapter presents the instructions on the techniques of clinical examinations and methods of undertaking practical procedures. It presents step-by-step process for plate tests, the City University colour vision test, and Farnsworth–Munsell 100 hue color vision test. The perception of colour is a cortical construct built on the stimulation of cone photoreceptors sensitive to specific wavelengths. Disruption of conduction along the optic nerve will result in disturbances in colour vision, in particular, the saturation of reds. Colour-vision testing is therefore one of the five assessments of optic-nerve health – the remainder being relative afferent pupillary defect, visual fields, visual acuity and direct observation of the disc.
