ABSTRACT

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? BEING ABLE AND BEING UNABLE In 2012, the UK was enraptured with Olympic fever and the response to the achievements of able-bodied athletes was far surpassed by watching the extraordinary feats of the paralympians. Martine Wright, the Team GB sitting volleyball athlete who lost both legs in the 7/7 bombings in London, was inspired to participate in the Olympics because the reason that she had caught a later train that day was that she had been celebrating London being awarded the Olympic bid the night before. She had been faced with the need to deal with and adapt to a new way of being as someone with no legs, and choices about her future life.
