ABSTRACT

There is a complex relationship between substance use and adolescent development. The use of alcohol and other substances are seen within some cultures as a rite of passage or the start of adulthood. It is important that staff working with substance using adolescents have a good understanding of the potential adverse consequences. Many teenagers will argue that their substance use has not caused any problems. They may assert that adults need to calm down about the risks. In this chapter we outline the range of risks and problems potentially associated with substance use in adolescence. This should facilitate you in having an informed and balanced discussion with teenagers about the potential hazards of their substance use.
