ABSTRACT

Difference can be challenging. Individuals are drawn to settle in groups where a common sense of identity is shared. Our roots are set down in a shared culture and the challenges of accepting one another’s race and ethnicity have been played out over time from nation to nation. Migration brings the opportunity to interact with and learn about other cultures, customs and experiences. It also brings the possibility of misunderstanding and prejudice. However, culture is not limited to the shared identity of the country in which we were born or our ethnicity. Indeed, groups of people born in the same country or town and of the same race can have very different cultural backgrounds.
