ABSTRACT

The essential vision Over the last decade, wireless technology has become the dominant means

for consumer device connectivity. The days of wired Ethernet are effectively

over for consumers, however, wireless has yet to transform enterprise

device connectivity to the same extent. As a consequence, the level of

innovation that has characterized the consumer mobile device ecosystem

has been largely absent in the enterprise space. The result is an environment

that remains rooted in the original wired telephony paradigm of a desktop

phone and workstation, with network connectivity provided using Ethernet

over twisted pair. The rise of bring your own device (BYOD) — a consumer-

employee-driven phenomenon — has started a revolution in enterprise

networking that will only be further fueled by technological advances in

consumer wireless telecommunications, ultimately bringing about the demise

of wired networking in the enterprise.
