ABSTRACT

Th e Darzi report, High Quality Care for All (June 2008),1 expanded NICE’s role to include setting and approving more independent quality standards for the NHS, particularly with regard to:

clinical eff ectiveness ➤ patient safety ➤ patient experience. ➤

NICE Guidance Developed using the expertise of the NHS and the wider healthcare community ➤ including NHS staff , healthcare professionals and patients (through consultation and workshops). Developed by considering research studies about diff erent types of treatment, ➤ interventions and care and how well they do or do not work. Balances the needs and wishes of individuals and the groups representing them, ➤ against those of the wider population. Th is sometimes means treatments are not recommended because they do not provide suffi cient benefi t to justify their cost.
