ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The introduction allows the reader to get to know the author, an older nurse, a bit, and understand why she wrote the book. The book explores key contemporary issues, describes the necessary skills, and uses thought-provoking case studies from genuine experiences. For the sake of integrity, and with respect to the reader, the context stays within the author's experience as a nurse in the United Kingdom (UK). The author also believes that compassion is an easy bedfellow with humour – they can be synergistic. Sometimes the author worries that as a profession, the nursing community have become bogged down and lost the knack of laughing and sharing their stories. The format of the book describes the journey for the patient and his or her carers.
