ABSTRACT

Within the United Kingdom, the diagnosis of cancer and its staging and subsequent treatment options are discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting. Treatments for cancer include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapies, biological therapies and supportive care. Treatment of other life-threatening diseases includes both disease-modifying treatment and drugs to manage symptoms. Various medicines may improve the quality of life, slow down the disease or minimise symptoms. People are often given more than one type of treatment for their disease. Surgery can be used to diagnose, treat or even help prevent cancer in some cases. There are over 50 different chemotherapy drugs that may be used alone or in combination. Chemotherapy encompasses a wide variety of therapy treatments. In cancer clinical trials, patients receive treatment and doctors carry out research on how the treatment affects patients.
