ABSTRACT

Historically, thyroid surgery was described as a perilous surgical misadventure. With increased awareness about pathology and biological behaviour of the thyroid malignancy, surgeries are now “tailor made” for each patient. This will eliminate unnecessary post-operative morbidity. Due to the detailed knowledge of anatomy and improvement of surgical tools like intra-operative nerve monitoring or visualization of the parathyroid intra-operatively with improved gamma cameras, the post-operative complication rates have been reduced to single or even decimal digits. This chapter will help the new entrant to the speciality with useful surgical tips. This also makes interesting reading for the expert by way of sharing some technical variations of the author and his colleagues.
