ABSTRACT

Following the fundamentals of planar optical waveguide, this chapter describes the three dimensional (3D) optical waveguides in which the waveguide is restricted in both transverse directions. A simplified analysis of these waveguides, the effective index method (EIM) and numerical techniques, the finite difference method (FDM), are described and examples are given. In this chapter, we analyze the modes which are guided by 3D waveguides with rectangular geometries using mainly Marcatili’s method and the EIM as analytical techniques.
