ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the role and significance of remote sensing in mine reclamation and closure practices. Following the definition of mine reclamation, the essence of mine reclamation for sustainable mining and its relevance to mine closure are stated. The main stages of mine reclamation from pre-mining planning to post-closure monitoring for surface mining are comprehensively discussed. Potential use of remote sensing as an alternative tool to conventional techniques at mine reclamation stages are explained in detail. Finally, two case studies about the use of remote sensing in surface coal mine reclamation are presented.
