This thesis focused on the private sector involvement in solid waste collec-

tion, and in particular the private sector performance and capacity and lo-

cal governments‘ regulation of the private sector. There are gaps in the literature on the understanding of the private sector involvement in solid

waste management in developing countries, and the factors which influ-

ence private sector performance and participation which this research has

tried to address. It is useful to understand the factors why certain private

sector companies are more efficient than other companies since certain

companies have competitive advantage over others. When the factors for

higher private sector efficiency are understood, it is possible to prepare ar-

rangements for involving private companies such that higher efficiency is

achieved in practice (Cointreau-Levine and Coad, 2000).
