ABSTRACT

The genus Microascus comprises a group of saprobic ascomycetes in the family Microascaceae and includes the anamorphic (asexual) stage Scopulariopsis. Microascus and Scopulariopsis are found primarily on cellulosic and protein-rich substrata (soil, plant litter, wood, dung, and animal remains) and have a global distribution in tropical, temperate, and polar regions. They are prevalent in human environments and can be important as agents of biodeterioration, indoor contamination, and opportunistic infection.
