If the physical properties of liquids were any indication, successful solvent replacement with aqueous cleaners would never be possible. The components and the behavior of the water molecule are nothing like those of a typical organic solvent used for cleaning, as evidenced by the high polarity and dipole moment of water. To illustrate, some important physical properties of the chlorinated solvent trichloroethylene (TCE) and water are compared in Table 1.
