ABSTRACT

To extend the above works and to study the behaviour of buried pipes under strong cyclic loads, a physical model has been designed and constructed at the Civil Engineering Department of K.N. Toosi University of Technology. A series of different tests on the single buried pipe of 110 mm diameter, buried in unreinforced and reinforced sand was carried out to evaluate the role of soil density, pipe embedment depth and number of reinforced layers. The description of the testing equipment, testing materials, and results of tests are presented and discussed in the following sections. In each test, the vertical radial strain (VDS), which is defined as the reduction of diameter in the vertical direction divided by initial diameter, is used to describe the results.
