ABSTRACT

Rigid and flexible model piles were manufactured to simulate at 50 g a prototype steel pile with a diameter B = 0.9 m and an embedment depth D = 16 m, following classical scaling laws (e.g. Garnier et al. 2007). The flexible model pile was made of a tubular aluminium pipe with a wall thickness of 1 mm. The rigid model pile is an aluminium rod with the same diameter and length as the flexible pile. Hence, only the bending stiffness of the rigid and flexible model piles Ep Ip differs. The table below summarizes the properties of the prototype piles.
