ABSTRACT

Some Russian railways are located in rocky areas where track deformations might occur. Mostly, this happens due to rockfalls and avalanches. There are numerous examples of such deformations in Russia: a freight train crash near the SovGavan’ Harbor in the Russian Far East due to rockfall (Kvashuk & Koltun 2008); a snow avalanche near Mezdurecherensk town (Siberia) was also the reason for a train crash (snow avalanche of about 7000 cubic meters)—Figure 1.
