ABSTRACT
When the earthquake happens, flow failure of backfill occurs behind the wall causing large seaward movement. Using deformable materials as a fuse in between the backfill ground and the wall may improve the quay wall behavior, whereby the fuse must act as a geotechnical energy absorber (fuse) that limits force transfer to the wall from the backfill.
