ABSTRACT

A new concept of soil reinforced with threedimensional (3D) reinforcing elements was proposed by Zhang et al. (2006). A comprehensive set of triaxial tests was carried out on sand reinforced in this way. The behavior of sand reinforced with 3D reinforcement and conventional horizontal reinforcement, respectively, is then compared in terms of its stress-strain relationship and shear strength. For sand reinforced with conventional horizontal reinforcement, the reinforced sand exhibits a similar internal friction angle to that of unreinforced sand but with a significant increase in apparent cohesion.
