ABSTRACT

However, due to many restrictions in centrifuge modeling, it is not possible to closely replicate a prototype situation; compromises are required, in which some secondary factors are left out, while the essential ones are kept. Nevertheless, even an ‘imperfect’ centrifuge model can be useful and helpful, especially when engineers confront unprecedented cases. This paper reports a case study of a deep excavation in soft ground, showing the application of centrifuge modeling in validating the design and construction.
