ABSTRACT

In actual industrial practice, the principles of adhesive formulation depend on the expertise of the manufacturer. Such expertise is based mostly on practical experience. In applied sciences, formulation principles are based on theoretical knowledge and experimental data about the chemistry and engineering of the materials used for formulation. Generally, in the adhesive‘s field, design and formulation comprises both the synthesis of the raw materials and their mixing technology (Sch.4.1):

Formulation by mixing requires knowledge about the components of the blend. Such knowledge includes basic information concerning the synthesis of the polymeric raw materials also. In some cases (see In-situ Manufacture), synthesis and mixing of the adhesive components occur simultaneously. Therefore, for a better understanding of the principles of mixing, in this chapter we shall first consider the synthesis and synthesis-related formulation of the raw materials used to create the final adhesive.
