ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, we emphasized the key global features of premixed turbulent £ames, which are well documented in numerous experiments. Our goal in this chapter is to discuss in detail the physical mechanisms that could control the general appearance of premixed turbulent £ames and, in particular, the trends highlighted in Chapter 4. It is worth stressing that in order for turbulence to accelerate £ame propagation, the turbulence should increase not only the mass burning rate within a turbulent £ame brush but also the speed of the self-propagation of the leading edge of the £ame brush, with the two processes in balance with each other. The focus of this chapter is on the former effect, whereas the self-propagation of the leading edge is discussed in the section “Concept of Leading Points” in Chapter 7.
