ABSTRACT

Introduction Microtia ranges from a very mild form in which the ears are grossly normal but

prominent, to complete absence of the ear, termed anotia. Severe abnormalities oc­ cur in roughly 1 in 8,000 births. There is a predisposition of microtia to occur in males, with a male: female ratio o f about 2:1. The right side is also twice as likely to be affected as the left, and bilateral cases occur in 10% of cases. Microtia is most commonly described according to the classification described by Tanzer (Table 57.1).
