ABSTRACT

In pharmacologic fibrinolysis, the excessive quantity of endogenous plasmino gen activators overwhelms the inhibitors o f fibrinolysis and leads to generalized fi brinolysis. Excess plasmin can destroy any thrombi and degrades circulating fibrinogen. Although tPA is more “clot specific” than streptokinase due to the pres ence of kringle regions that can bind fibrin, in practice the use of tPA has not re sulted in less bleeding.
