ABSTRACT

As demand for liver transplantation increases, hepatocyte transplantation will play an increasingly important role in the clinic. Clinically, hepatocyte transplantation has already shown its potential as a bridging adjunct to the standard clinical practice of Orthotopic Liver Transplantation (OLT). However, it also has the potential to treat liver-based metabolic disorders, acute liver failure and perhaps replace OLT in severe and end-stage chronic liver disease. In this chapter we examine some of the benefits and potential issues with hepatocyte transplantation, look at the current pre clinical and clinical research currently underway.
