ABSTRACT

Glycoproteomics is one o f the most promising fields that can lead us to discover new biomarkers in various types o f diseases including cancers. Glycoproteomics is a branch o f proteomics and identifies and characterizes the proteins which contain carbohydrates as a posttranslational modification. It studies not only the levels o f glycoproteins in the samples but also the changes o f glycosylation patterns on the glycoproteins in various diseases through MS (mass spectrometry)-based analysis. This chapter covers the major glycosylation process in proteins and the technologies used in the glycoprotein analysis and also highlights the application o f the glycoproteome analysis with regard to the discovery o f diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers for more accurate cancer diagnosis and therapy and for better understanding o f cancer progression.
