ABSTRACT

The first six years of mosquito transgenesis have seen dramatic increases in the number of mosquito species that have been genetically transformed, the number of transposable element vectors that have been utilized to produce transformants, and in the diversity of applications for which the basic technology has been used. While there have been many encouraging advances, there have been some problems encountered and the frequency by which independent transgenic lines of mosquitoes can be generated, remains relatively low. Even with these issues remaining to be resolved, the ability to genetically transform mosquito species has seen the utilization of a wide range of genetic constructs for the purposes of gene discovery, unlocking the keys to gene regulation and the production of transgenic strains that are refrac tory to certain pathogens. This chapter will address the advances, issues and provide a view to the future of mosquito transgenesis.
