ABSTRACT

This book connects two fields of thought that are not very often connected: science and the Talmud. The book relates the fields by looking at two subjects common to both of them: a sys tem of values and a method of interpretationhermeneutics. The connection is personal. Although I studied medicine and specialized in pediatrics, I have been doing science as a professional immunologist for over thirty years. In contrast, my knowledge of the Talmud is private and limited to chance meanderings. As a youth, I studied Talmud formally for several years, but since then I have had only occasional contact with true Talmudic scholars or with their books.
