ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Gene therapy involves the insertion of a functional gene into a target cell popu
lation that subsequently corrects a genetic defect or adds a desirable function to those cells. Clinical application of gene transfer involves: 1) isolation, characteriza tion, and expansion of target cells and 2) efficient and safe methods of gene trans fer resulting in stable expression of the inserted gene.
