ABSTRACT

Global leather industry is undergoing paradigm shift from chemical to bio-based leather making to meet the growing environmental challenges. A short appraisal on the use o f enzymes in current leather processing has been presented. Although enzymes find use in many areas o f leather processing, enzyme-only dehairing and fibre opening presents a break through approach. This methodology is being explored to avoid obnoxious sodium sulphide and to eliminate lime sludge. Enzyme applications for some unusual areas o f leather making are also briefly outlined.
