ABSTRACT
Introduction This chapter will review common principles o f reconstructive surgery, with special
emphasis on application to pelvic reconstructions. Many o f these principles can be applied to less radical pelvic procedures or are used for reconstruction after compli cations o f benign procedures, treatment o f hydradinitis suppuritiva or necrotizing fasciitis, pelvic trauma and in conjunction with radical general surgery or urological procedures involving the female pelvis. The alterations in anatomy produced by radi cal pelvic surgery and/or radiation therapy often results in disruption o f functional pelvic anatomy, sexual response, body self-image and psychosocial interactions.1,2 Recognition o f these issues has led to recommendations for appropriate individu alization o f the radical extent o f major resections for some diseases, such as vulvar cancer and an increasing awareness for the use o f reconstructive techniques following radical pelvic surgery.
