ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss common network security problems and appropriate countermeasures. Where Chapter 2 gave an overview of computer and network security, this chapter provides familiarity with current network security approaches. Many issues discussed, for example virtual private networks, are explored in depth in other chapters. Computers are relatively easy to secure when they are isolated and physically secure, since attackers will have only limited access. But most computers are no longer isolated. They are connected to networks, giving attackers continuous access.
