ABSTRACT

Leishmaniasis is a chronic infestation of the skin, mucosa or viscera caused by several species of intracellular protozoan of the genus Leishmania. They are transmitted to human beings mainly by vectors of the gender Lutzomyia spp. and Phlebotomus spp. The clinical manifestations depend on the species of the parasite, on the genetic background and the state of immunity of the host.
