ABSTRACT

Neoplasms involving the BM are important causes of cytopenias but are not the most common. This chapter focuses on non-neoplastic cytopenias as well as general concepts for their evaluation and morphologic features. The discussion will center on BM morphology, rather than strictly follow a traditional encyclopedic listing and description of diseases. The limitations of BM examination for the diagnosis of these disorders are many and w ill be self-evident. A few diseases, such as iron deficiency anemia, w ill be presented in greater detail outside of the narrow context of BM morphology because of their ubiquitousness and importance in the overall context of human disease.
