Since the introduction of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 1987 by Mouret et al1 laparoscopic surgery has been widely accepted and applied to a variety o f dis­ eases including malignant lesions. Laparoscopic procedures for benign lesions re­ duce pain and enhance early postoperative recovery compared to open surgery. Recently, more than 1,300 papers on laparoscopic surgery have been published in English literature, o f which 11% involved malignancy (Table 1.1). Although there have been many technical advances in surgery, the nature of cancer has not changed.
